Belém Tower
Francisco de Arruda · Lisbon, Portugal · 1519
Francisco de Arruda's Belém Tower combines a defensive bastion with a tall ceremonial marker on the Tagus. Completed in 1519, it uses local limestone and Manueline ornament to connect military infrastructure with royal representation. The lower platform and upper tower respond to different functions, producing a compact but varied architectural composition. Its present relationship to the riverbank differs from its earlier setting, so the site is best read through both the building and the changing shoreline. Views around the exterior make the distinction between fortified base, decorated openings and vertical lookout especially clear. Visiting: The tower normally requires a ticket. Check restoration closures before planning an interior visit.
