Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library
Gordon Bunshaft / Skidmore, Owings & Merrill · New Haven, United States · 1963
The Beinecke Library encloses rare books within a monumental translucent stone box. A structural frame carries thin marble panels that filter daylight into a warm amber interior while protecting sensitive collections from direct sun. At the center, a six-story glass book tower turns storage itself into the main spatial focus, surrounded by a sunken exhibition court. Completed in 1963, Gordon Bunshaft’s building combines technical conservation requirements with an unusually powerful civic and ceremonial presence on Yale’s campus.
