Batalha Monastery

Afonso Domingues; Huguet; Mateus Fernandes · Batalha, Portugal · 1517

Batalha Monastery commemorates the Portuguese victory at Aljubarrota and developed through successive royal building campaigns. Afonso Domingues, Huguet and Mateus Fernandes were among the architects who shaped its Gothic and Manueline spaces. The church, royal burial chapels, cloisters and celebrated Unfinished Chapels reveal different relationships between structure, ornament and dynastic memory. Construction extended into the early sixteenth century, and some elements deliberately retain an incomplete appearance. Walking around the complex is valuable before entering: the changing heights and profiles explain how the monastery grew as a sequence of related but distinct architectural projects. Visiting: Paid areas include the cloisters. The church has distinct access arrangements. The Unfinished Chapels remain intentionally incomplete.
