Basilica of Santo Spirito

Filippo Brunelleschi; Salvi d'Andrea · Florence, Italy · 1488

Brunelleschi develops the church from a rigorous modular grid in which columns, arches and side chapels repeat around the entire perimeter. The unfinished plain facade conceals one of Florence's most spatially coherent Renaissance interiors, where perspective and proportion remain unusually legible.
