Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia
André-Jacques Dunoyer de Segonzac; Pierre Dupré · Higüey, Dominican Republic · 1971
The basilica is defined by a very tall curved structural arch and a concentrated interior prayer space. Its modern architectural language departs from conventional historicist church forms while retaining a strong ceremonial approach and an unmistakable role as a pilgrimage destination. Visiting: A major pilgrimage church, open to visitors outside main services; it is busiest around 21 January, the Altagracia feast day.
