Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa

Emilio Morales Roque (project author) · Tegucigalpa, Honduras · 2005

The Basilica of Suyapa is a large modern pilgrimage church designed to accommodate the national devotion to Honduras’s patron image. Its monumental twin-tower façade fronts a broad gathering space, while the large interior is organized for high-capacity ceremonies rather than the compact scale of the older shrine nearby. Completed after a prolonged construction process, the basilica translates traditional cathedral imagery into a late-twentieth-century concrete structure. Its urban scale and national religious role make it one of Tegucigalpa’s most prominent contemporary landmarks.
