Bank of Georgia Headquarters
George Chakhava + Zurab Jalaghania · Tbilisi, Georgia · 1975
The former Ministry of Highway Construction building, now Bank of Georgia headquarters, is one of the best-known examples of late Soviet architecture in the Caucasus. George Chakhava and Zurab Jalaghania composed the office from stacked concrete bars that bridge across one another and lift substantial parts of the program above the sloping site. The resulting structure leaves landscape and circulation to pass beneath the building while creating an unusually porous megastructure. Completed in 1975, it remains a powerful example of Soviet brutalism combined with a site-specific concept of building as elevated infrastructure.
