Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

Robert G. Boughey & Associates · Bangkok, Thailand · 2008

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is organized around a tall circular atrium wrapped by a gently rising spiral of galleries, shops and public spaces. The circulation system makes movement through the building visible and social, recalling the continuous ramp of a museum while adapting it to a busy metropolitan arts center. Large openings, white surfaces and overhead light create a flexible backdrop for contemporary exhibitions, performances and civic events. Its position at Pathum Wan intersection and direct pedestrian links place culture within one of Bangkok's most intensely commercial districts. The center's value lies as much in its accessible public interior and programming as in its formal image.
