Banca Popolare di Verona
Carlo Scarpa · Verona, Italy · 1981
The headquarters of Banca Popolare di Verona was one of Carlo Scarpa’s final major architectural works and reflects the maturity of his architectural language during the 1970s. Located near Piazza delle Erbe in Verona, the project combines monumental concrete forms with highly refined detailing and carefully controlled interior light. Scarpa designed the bank as both a civic institution and an urban space, integrating public circulation areas, sculptural stairs, water elements, and layered material transitions into the overall composition. The project demonstrates his characteristic focus on joints, textures, thresholds, and the relationship between heavy structural forms and delicate crafted details. Despite the building’s strong geometric presence, the architecture remains deeply human-scaled through its tactile surfaces and carefully proportioned spaces. The bank is particularly significant because it reveals how Scarpa adapted his highly artisanal architectural approach to a large institutional program while maintaining the precision and intimacy that define his work.
