Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage

Konstantin Melnikov + Vladimir Shukhov · Moscow, Russia · 1927

Konstantin Melnikov’s Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage was designed around an innovative circulation system that allowed buses to enter, park diagonally and leave without reversing. The resulting parallelogram plan made vehicle movement the generator of architectural form. Vladimir Shukhov designed the lightweight steel roof structure spanning the large interior. Built in 1926–27, the garage became one of the canonical works of Soviet constructivism. After extensive restoration, the complex was adapted for cultural use and today houses the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center.
