Bayterek Tower

Akmyrza Rustembekov · Astana, Kazakhstan · 2002

Bayterek was conceived as a national monument for the new capital and quickly became Astana’s defining vertical symbol. A slender white structural lattice supports a large golden sphere high above Nurjol Boulevard, translating the Kazakh myth of the tree of life and the Samruk bird into an observation tower. The elevated viewing space frames the planned governmental city around it, while the monument’s isolated placement makes it legible from long distances. Completed in 2002, Bayterek is a key work of post-independence Kazakh state symbolism and urban image-making.
