Bagsværd Church

Jørn Utzon · Bagsværd, Denmark · 1976

Jørn Utzon’s Bagsværd Church is celebrated for the contrast between its restrained, almost industrial exterior and the extraordinary concrete vaults that shape its interior. Completed in 1976, the church is organized around a sequence of courts and circulation spaces beneath modular roof construction, while the sanctuary is defined by flowing, cloud-like ceiling forms. Utzon combined prefabrication, daylight and spatial symbolism without relying on conventional ecclesiastical imagery. The result is one of the most influential works of late twentieth-century church architecture and a concise demonstration of Utzon’s interest in additive systems and expressive section.
