Azm Palace
Local Damascene craftsmen for As'ad Pasha al-Azm · Damascus, Syria · 1750
Azm Palace is a major Damascene courtyard house built for Ottoman governor As'ad Pasha al-Azm. The complex is organized around separate ceremonial, family and service courts lined with striped stone façades, carved wood, fountains and richly decorated interiors. Rather than presenting a monumental street front, the architecture concentrates spatial richness within enclosed gardens and shaded rooms, reflecting the inward organization of elite domestic architecture in Damascus. Completed around 1750, the palace later became a museum and remains one of the most important surviving examples of eighteenth-century Syrian urban residential architecture.
