Azania Front Lutheran Church

German missionary builders · Dar es Salaam, Tanzania · 1898

Azania Front Lutheran Church is a prominent late-nineteenth-century landmark facing Dar es Salaam’s waterfront. Built by German missionaries, the church combines a steep red-tiled roof, white masonry walls and a tall clock-and-bell tower within a compact urban composition. Its interior is organized around a high timber roof and a relatively simple Protestant worship space. The building is an important surviving element of the colonial-era city and provides a strong architectural contrast to Dar es Salaam’s later modernist and post-independence public buildings.
