Australian War Memorial

Emil Sodersten + John Crust · Canberra, Australia · 1941

The Australian War Memorial combines a national shrine, museum and archival institution at the northern end of Canberra’s principal land axis. Emil Sodersten and John Crust developed a symmetrical stone complex organized around a domed commemorative core, flanking galleries and the Pool of Reflection. Its restrained Art Deco vocabulary gives the building a solemn monumental character while maintaining direct visual alignment with Parliament House across the city. Opened in 1941, the memorial is inseparable from Walter Burley Griffin’s larger urban composition and remains one of Australia’s most significant civic institutions.
