Australia Square

Harry Seidler · Sydney, Australia · 1967

Australia Square introduced a new relationship between high-rise offices and public space to central Sydney. Harry Seidler concentrated the principal offices in a cylindrical tower, freeing much of the site as a pedestrian plaza containing lower commercial buildings and integrated artworks. The tower’s circular floor plate, exposed structural rhythm and carefully detailed curtain wall distinguish it from the rectilinear office blocks of the period. Constructed from 1965 to 1967, the project became one of Seidler’s defining urban works and a landmark of Australian corporate modernism.
