Aula Magna UCV
Carlos Raúl Villanueva · Caracas, Venezuela · 1953
Carlos Raúl Villanueva’s Aula Magna is the ceremonial and acoustic heart of the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. Its interior is inseparable from Alexander Calder’s suspended acoustic Clouds, which operate simultaneously as sculpture and sound-control devices. Ramps, murals, covered plazas and adjacent buildings connect the auditorium to Villanueva’s broader synthesis of architecture and art across the university campus. The ensemble is one of the most important works of Latin American modernism and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
