Atomium

André Waterkeyn; André Polak; Jean Polak · Brussels, Belgium · 1958

The Atomium enlarges an iron-crystal arrangement into a network of connected spheres. Designed for the 1958 world’s fair, it combines engineering display, exhibition spaces and elevated viewpoints, turning a scientific diagram into an inhabitable architectural landmark. Visiting: Entry is ticketed; the structure can be seen freely from the surrounding Heysel park.
