Kengo Kuma & Associates · Tokyo, Japan · 2012

Opposite Kaminarimon, Kengo Kuma stacks a series of small pitched-roof volumes into a narrow eight-storey tower. Each floor reads almost like a separate house, while the sloping ceilings and timber louvers give the vertical public building a scale related to older Asakusa streets. The upper observation level also makes the project useful as an urban viewpoint over Senso-ji and the surrounding district.
