Art Gallery of Ontario – Gehry Transformation
Gehry Partners · Toronto, Canada · 2008
Frank Gehry's 2008 transformation reworked the Art Gallery of Ontario around new circulation, gallery space and a distinctive relationship with the street. A long glazed frontage and timber-lined public spaces give the institution a different urban presence, while new stairs make movement through the existing complex an architectural event. The project retains earlier parts of the gallery rather than replacing the institution with a wholly new building. Its value lies in the connections between those layers and in the changing views between interior rooms and the city. Visiting: Gallery admission depends on age, residency and exhibition. The 2008 date refers to the Gehry transformation.
