Art Gallery of Alberta
Randall Stout Architects · Edmonton, Canada · 2010
Randall Stout's redevelopment of the Art Gallery of Alberta gives the museum a conspicuous curving envelope on Edmonton's Churchill Square. Reopened in 2010, the building combines a clearly organized gallery programme with more fluid public circulation and exterior forms. Metal and glass respond to changing light, while the entrance addresses the surrounding civic precinct. The contrast between exhibition rooms and the more expressive spaces linking them is central to the design, allowing the museum to function as both a collection setting and an urban landmark. Visiting: Regular gallery admission is ticketed, with concessions and free periods.
