Art Gallery of New South Wales – Naala Badu

SANAA + Architectus · Sydney, Australia · 2022

The Art Gallery of New South Wales expansion by SANAA and Architectus is conceived as a loose sequence of low pavilions stepping down toward Sydney Harbour. Large glazed façades, overlapping roofs and landscaped terraces create a porous museum that contrasts with the more formal historic gallery nearby. The project incorporates a former wartime oil tank as an underground exhibition space, making adaptive reuse part of the visitor sequence. Completed and opened in 2022, the new building—now named Naala Badu—substantially expanded the institution while maintaining strong connections to landscape and city views.
