Arsenale della Repubblica
Unknown · Amalfi, Italy · 1100
The Arsenale della Repubblica is a rare surviving architectural reminder of Amalfi’s maritime power. The vaulted stone structure once served as a shipyard for the medieval republic, connecting architecture directly to naval construction, trade, and military capability. Unlike the more decorative monuments of the town, the arsenal is defined by robust spatial logic: pointed arches, deep bays, and a clear functional relationship to the harbor. Its value for ArchiAtlas lies in its ability to reveal the productive infrastructure behind Amalfi’s historic prosperity. Today, as a cultural and exhibition space, it allows visitors to understand the town not only as a picturesque destination but as a former maritime urban system.
