Arsenal, Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

Evgeny Ass Architects (contemporary adaptation) · Nizhny Novgorod, Russia · 2015

The Arsenal occupies a long nineteenth-century military storehouse built into the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin walls. Evgeny Ass Architects transformed the deep historic shell into a contemporary-art center through a restrained system of new stairs, galleries, technical infrastructure and inserted volumes. The renovation preserves the repetitive masonry structure and large vaulted spaces while clearly distinguishing contemporary interventions from the inherited fabric. Completed in stages and substantially opened by 2015, the project is an important Russian example of adaptive reuse in which a protected military monument becomes a flexible cultural institution without losing its architectural legibility.
