Ark of Bukhara

Multiple Bukharan dynasties and builders · Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The Ark of Bukhara is a massive fortified citadel whose high earthen walls contain the accumulated governmental, residential and ceremonial spaces of successive Bukharan rulers. Although the site has very ancient origins, the surviving architectural fabric reflects repeated rebuilding over many centuries, particularly under later khanates and emirates. Gates, courtyards, mosques, reception halls and service spaces form a compact city within the city. Its architectural importance lies in this layered evolution and in the defensive earthen construction that gives the Ark its powerful sculptural presence at the edge of Bukhara’s historic center.
