Arch of Triumph, Pyongyang
Baikdoosan Architects & Engineers / Mansudae Art Studio · Pyongyang, North Korea · 1982
Pyongyang’s Arch of Triumph was completed in 1982 to commemorate Korean resistance to Japanese rule and the political mythology surrounding Kim Il Sung. The monumental stone-clad gateway is composed as an enlarged triumphal arch with multiple tiers, sculptural reliefs and inscriptions. Its scale exceeds many European precedents and establishes a strong ceremonial focus at a major traffic intersection near Moranbong Park. The monument is a characteristic example of North Korean state architecture in which familiar historical typologies are enlarged and repurposed as highly controlled symbols of national political identity.
