Arbob Cultural Palace
Hikmat Yuldoshev; engineer Viktor Mochalov · Khujand area, Tajikistan · 1957
Arbob Palace was built as the administrative and cultural center of a major collective farm near Khujand. Architect Hikmat Yuldoshev and engineer Viktor Mochalov developed a highly symmetrical palace-and-park composition inspired by monumental Russian precedents but executed with extensive Tajik decorative craft. Fountains, ceremonial stairs, richly ornamented halls and landscaped terraces give the building a scale far beyond a typical agricultural administrative center. Completed in 1957, Arbob later became nationally significant as a site of major political meetings during Tajikistan’s independence and civil-war period, adding historical importance to its unusual Soviet regional architecture.
