Arba'a Rukun Mosque

Medieval Somali builders · Mogadishu, Somalia · 1260

Arba’a Rukun is among Mogadishu’s oldest surviving mosques and an important record of medieval urban culture on the Somali coast. Its compact masonry form, simple prayer hall and distinctive minaret belong to a local Islamic building tradition connected to wider Indian Ocean trade networks. The building has endured major political upheaval and destruction in the surrounding city, making its survival particularly significant. Traditionally dated to the thirteenth century, the mosque offers rare architectural evidence of pre-colonial Mogadishu beyond later Italian and post-independence construction.
