ANDO MUSEUM

Tadao Ando · Naoshima, Japan · 2013

ANDO MUSEUM inserts a sharply detailed concrete structure inside and beneath a traditional timber house in Naoshima's Honmura district. The old exterior remains legible in the streetscape while the interior becomes a compact collision of timber, concrete, light wells and subterranean space. It is a useful miniature summary of Ando's recurring themes and of Naoshima's strategy of adding contemporary interventions without erasing village fabric.
