Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall

Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti · Bangkok, Thailand · 1915

The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall is the grandest surviving expression of the Siamese court's early-twentieth-century engagement with European state architecture. Italian architects Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti designed a symmetrical marble composition centered on a large dome and flanked by smaller domed volumes. Renaissance and neoclassical references give the building the visual language of a European parliament or palace, while its placement within the Dusit royal precinct ties it to Thailand's political modernization. Interior frescoes by Italian artists narrate the Chakri dynasty. The hall's function has shifted over time between throne room, parliamentary venue and exhibition space. Public access can be restricted, so opening arrangements should be checked before visiting.
