Alvar Aalto Library, Vyborg
Alvar Aalto · Vyborg, Russia · 1935
Alvar Aalto’s Vyborg Library is a foundational work of modern architecture in which functional planning is combined with unusually sensitive handling of light, acoustics and material. The lecture hall’s undulating timber ceiling, top-lit reading rooms and carefully designed circulation demonstrate Aalto’s move away from strict functionalism toward a more human-centered modernism. Completed in 1935 when Vyborg was part of Finland, the building later suffered deterioration and alterations before a major Finnish-Russian restoration returned much of its original spatial and material character. It remains one of Aalto’s most important early works.
