Altun Ha

Maya builders (individual architects not recorded) · Rockstone Pond, Belize

Altun Ha preserves the core of a Maya city close to Belize's Caribbean lowlands. Temple-pyramids and other masonry structures are arranged around plazas, producing clear relationships between raised ceremonial platforms and shared open ground. The Temple of the Masonry Altars is the site's best-known architectural element. A visit is most useful when it follows the changing levels and alignments between building groups, where the scale of the former settlement becomes clearer than it does from a single view of one pyramid. Visiting: An archaeological reserve with paid admission. Do not climb structures unless the site rules explicitly permit it. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
