Allmannajuvet
Atelier Peter Zumthor & Partner · Sauda, Norway · 2016
Peter Zumthor’s Allmannajuvet project transforms the remains of a nineteenth-century zinc-mining landscape into a sequence of small visitor structures suspended along a steep ravine. Completed in 2016 for Norway’s National Tourist Routes, the museum complex uses dark timber, exposed framing and carefully placed platforms to intensify the rugged site rather than compete with it. The dispersed architecture asks visitors to move between landscape, industrial history and enclosed exhibition spaces. It is a compelling example of Zumthor’s ability to combine atmospheric materiality with precise intervention in a remote setting.
