Allianz Riviera
Jean-Michel Wilmotte · Nice, France · 2013
Allianz Riviera is a major contemporary stadium on the western edge of Nice, designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte / Wilmotte & Associés and completed in 2013. The building was conceived as a multipurpose venue rather than only a football ground, combining sports, events, and large-scale public assembly. Its architectural identity comes from a light, rounded envelope and a structural system that emphasizes transparency and openness rather than the heavy mass typically associated with stadiums. The roof and façade use a timber-and-metal framework with translucent cladding, creating a softer relationship between the seating bowl, the surrounding landscape, and the changing Mediterranean light. Sustainability and operational flexibility are key parts of the design narrative, with the stadium often presented as an “eco-stadium” for the Côte d’Azur. For ArchiAtlas, it is important because it represents a newer infrastructural scale in the Riviera: not the historic promenade or villa, but the contemporary event building as an urban landmark.
