Alexandrinsky Theatre

Carlo Rossi · Saint Petersburg, Russia · 1832

The Alexandrinsky Theatre is the centerpiece of Carlo Rossi’s extraordinary urban composition around Ostrovsky Square and Rossi Street. A monumental Corinthian portico, sculptural quadriga and carefully proportioned façades give the building a strong ceremonial presence, while the horseshoe auditorium provides the spatial focus inside. Completed in 1832, the theatre was not conceived in isolation: its architecture, square and adjacent streets form a controlled sequence of urban spaces. It remains one of the clearest examples of Russian Empire architecture operating simultaneously at building and city scale.
