Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Alexander Pomerantsev · Sofia, Bulgaria · 1912
Sofia’s Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a monumental cross-domed Orthodox church built as a national memorial after Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule. Alexander Pomerantsev combined a large central gold dome, multiple subsidiary domes and a richly articulated stone exterior within a neo-Byzantine composition. Inside, vast painted and mosaic surfaces create a strongly ceremonial atmosphere around the central nave. Completed in the early twentieth century, the cathedral became the dominant religious landmark of the Bulgarian capital and a major example of national identity expressed through revived Byzantine architectural language.
