Akureyri Church

Guðjón Samúelsson · Akureyri, Iceland · 1940

Akureyrarkirkja is a major work by Guðjón Samúelsson and one of the defining landmarks of northern Iceland’s principal town. Completed in 1940, the church sits prominently above Akureyri’s center, reached by a long flight of steps that reinforces its civic presence. Its symmetrical façade, paired towers and simplified massing combine traditional church composition with the more abstract tendencies of early twentieth-century Icelandic architecture. The building is particularly significant as part of Samúelsson’s broader effort to develop a monumental architectural language suited to the young Icelandic state.
