Ajanta Caves

Buddhist monastic builders · Ajanta, India

The Ajanta Caves turn a curving rock face into a sequence of Buddhist monasteries and worship halls. Excavated columns, façades and vaulted spaces give architectural order to interiors cut from the hillside. Paintings and sculpture remain integral to those spaces, connecting the physical making of the caves with their religious and communal life. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The site is closed on Mondays.
