Agrasen ki Baoli

Traditional builders; attribution uncertain · Delhi, India

Agrasen ki Baoli takes the form of a long descent into the ground, lined by repeated arched recesses. The stepwell turns water infrastructure into a carefully proportioned architectural space. Moving down the broad stair changes the relationship with the surrounding city, replacing street-level activity with masonry, shadow and a narrowing view of the sky. Visiting: Public exterior and ordinary circulation areas can be viewed without a visitor ticket. Journeys and controlled platforms have separate ticket requirements.
