Agra Fort

Mughal imperial workshops · Agra, India

Agra Fort encloses a layered royal landscape behind massive red sandstone walls. Successive Mughal rulers transformed its courts, audience halls and residential pavilions, introducing refined marble architecture within an earlier fortified enclosure. The complex is best read as a sequence of changing ceremonial, domestic and defensive spaces rather than a single building campaign. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The red sandstone walls along the Yamuna can be seen freely from outside.
