Agostinho Neto Memorial

Soviet Institute for Projects; Mansudae Overseas Projects (completion) · Luanda, Angola · 2011

The Agostinho Neto Memorial is dominated by a tall tapering monument rising above a broad ceremonial base dedicated to Angola’s first president. The project originated in the socialist-era relationship between Angola and the Soviet Union and was later completed with North Korean technical involvement after a long interruption. Museum, memorial and state ceremonial functions are combined within the complex. Physically completed around 2011 and opened soon afterward, it is an unusually clear architectural record of Angola’s changing international alliances and post-independence culture of monumentality.
