African Renaissance Monument

Pierre Goudiaby Atepa; Mansudae Overseas Projects · Dakar, Senegal · 2010

The African Renaissance Monument crowns one of Dakar’s Mamelles hills with a colossal bronze group representing a family rising toward the Atlantic horizon. Pierre Goudiaby Atepa developed the architectural and site concept, while the monumental sculpture was executed with North Korean technical participation. A long ceremonial stair and elevated platform transform the hill into a national monument visible across the city. Opened in 2010, the project is a striking example of twenty-first-century African state monumentality and of architecture, landscape and figurative sculpture functioning as one composition.
