Africa Hall

Arturo Mezzedimi · Addis Ababa, Ethiopia · 1961

Africa Hall was built as a major conference venue for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and soon became associated with continental diplomacy and the founding era of the Organization of African Unity. Arturo Mezzedimi’s modernist building combines a broad assembly hall with carefully composed public interiors and large artworks, including an important stained-glass work by Afewerk Tekle. Completed in 1961, the building reflects the international modern architecture of the period while carrying exceptional political significance within post-colonial African history.
