Adelaide Festival Centre
Hassell / John Morphett · Adelaide, Australia · 1973
Adelaide Festival Centre was the first major purpose-built performing arts complex of its type in Australia. Its white sculptural roofs and angular forms create a distinctive ensemble on the River Torrens, combining a major theatre with additional performance and public spaces. Designed by Hassell with John Morphett closely associated with the project, the complex helped establish Adelaide’s identity as a festival city and anchored a broader riverbank cultural precinct. Opened in 1973, it remains a major work of late Australian modernism.
