Academy of Athens

Theophil Hansen · Athens, Greece · 1885

Theophil Hansen’s academy forms part of Athens’ celebrated neoclassical ensemble. The symmetrical frontage, columned entrance and sculptural elements present a formal civic image, illustrating how nineteenth-century public architecture drew on ancient Greek forms to represent a modern national institution. Visiting: The interior is generally not open to visitors; the Ionic facade with its columns bearing Athena and Apollo is best seen from Panepistimiou Street.
