Academic Quadrangle, Simon Fraser University
Arthur Erickson + Geoffrey Massey + Zoltan S. Kiss · Burnaby, Canada · 1967
Simon Fraser University’s Academic Quadrangle is a broad concrete teaching complex organized around a large rectangular court and reflecting pond. Covered walkways, repetitive structural bays and terraces link classrooms to the central open space while framing mountain and sky views across Burnaby Mountain. Built during the university’s first campus phase in the mid-1960s, the quadrangle demonstrates Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey’s ambition to make the entire university read as one continuous architectural landscape rather than a set of independent buildings.
