Abbey of San Galgano
Unknown Cistercian builders · Chiusdino, Italy · 1288
The roofless Cistercian abbey reduces Gothic architecture to stone walls, pointed arcades and the changing sky. Because the nave is open to the landscape, the ruin makes structural rhythm, proportion and material weathering unusually legible and is one of Tuscany's most spatially powerful architectural ruins.
