Aarhus City Hall

Arne Jacobsen + Erik Møller · Aarhus, Denmark · 1941

Designed by Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller, Aarhus City Hall is a refined example of Scandinavian functionalism adapted to a major civic commission. Completed in 1941, the complex is organized as clearly articulated wings around public spaces, clad in pale marble and detailed with exceptional precision. The later-added tower became the building’s most visible urban marker. Its restrained exterior, carefully designed interiors and integration of furniture and fittings exemplify the Danish tradition of treating architecture and design as a continuous discipline.
