The Aalto House

Alvar Aalto + Aino Aalto · Helsinki, Finland · 1936

Designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto as their own home and studio, the Aalto House combines the clarity of modern architecture with unusually warm, tactile materials and domestic scale. Completed in 1936, the building divides living and working functions while allowing them to overlap through carefully composed interiors, terraces and garden relationships. Timber, brick, render and natural finishes soften the modernist geometry. The house is particularly valuable because it reveals how the Aaltos tested ideas of furniture, material atmosphere and everyday living at an intimate scale.
