8 House

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2010

8 House is one of BIG’s defining early works and a key stop in Ørestad’s contemporary architectural landscape. The building folds housing, offices, retail, and communal facilities into a figure-eight loop, creating two courtyards and a continuous sloping path that allows residents and visitors to move through the project almost like an urban street. Instead of treating the residential block as a closed perimeter, BIG stretches and twists it to optimize daylight, views toward Kalvebod Fælled, and contact between public and private life. Its terraced roofscape, diagonal circulation, and mixture of row houses and apartments make the building a strong example of BIG’s “architectural alchemy”: combining ordinary programs into a more generous urban form.
